ICARUS: Ice sculptures of diatom glass shells

Ice sculptures resembling diatom shells were recently showcased at GrETUA in the University of Aveiro. This exhibition was prepared in the framework of ICARUS, an art-science project that finds inspiration in the minute biophotonic structures of diatoms, as studied in MP2Lab.

Using crystal clear ice as medium, ICARUS crafts large sculptures that embody the transient nature of the artwork as they slowly melt during exhibition. Complementing these sculptures are laser projectors that cast captivating patterns, adding another layer of fascination for viewers. ICARUS strives to raise awareness about the beauty, fragility, and vulnerability of microscopic life. Further details at: https://www.instagram.com/icarusdiatoms/
